Jeffrey Tan, the Group Sales Director of Regal Hotels International, is a seasoned professional with over 20 years of experience in the hospitality industry.  He’s not just a sales expert; he’s a relationship builder, a friend to his clients, and a passionate advocate for the unique spirit of Regal Hotels.

 

From Glamour to Grounded Reality

 

Jeffrey’s initial draw to sales was the perceived glamour of the industry. But he quickly realized that sales in hospitality is a demanding, results-driven field.  “Sales is the moving force behind everything,” he says.  “It’s about understanding your clients’ needs, supporting them, and building genuine relationships.”  And those relationships are what have kept him in the industry for over two decades.

 

Navigating the Pandemic and the Power of Technology

 

The pandemic brought significant change to the hospitality landscape.  Jeffrey acknowledges that technology played a crucial role in staying connected with clients during challenging times.  “It’s not just about building relationships anymore; it’s about using technology to stay connected and provide support,” he explains.  However, he emphasizes that even with the rise of technology, the personal touch remains essential.  “You still need to connect with people, understand their needs, and treat them with respect.”

 

Leading a Global Team and the Importance of Balance

 


As Group Sales Director, Jeffrey manages a global team, overseeing sales for 15 markets across Regal Hotels’ 12 properties in Hong Kong.  He oversees over 6,500 rooms and more than 100 meeting spaces.  “It’s very taxing,” he admits.  “I work long hours, even after office hours, because I have clients in the UK, the Middle East, and Russia.”  He recognizes the need to balance his work life with his personal life, but he’s committed to his role and passionate about his work.

Regal Hotels stands out in the Hong Kong market with its diverse portfolio of properties, each with its own personality and target market.  “I always have a property to propose to my clients, based on their specific needs,” says Jeffrey.  From the centrally located Regal Hong Kong to the Iclub properties in Wan Chai and Shanghai, Regal Hotels offers a range of options to meet diverse needs.

 

Key Markets and Future Growth

 

Jeffrey highlights the Philippines as a significant market for Regal Hotels, driven by strong connectivity and a growing demand for travel.  He’s also focusing on key markets like Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the US, and Australia.  He’s confident that the European market holds significant potential for future growth.

 

Hong Kong’s Position in the Global Landscape

 

Jeffrey believes that Hong Kong remains a crucial destination, acting as a stepping stone for travelers to Southeast Asia.  He acknowledges that the city’s late reopening has impacted occupancy rates, but he’s optimistic about the future.  “Hong Kong offers a unique blend of culture, vibrancy, and affordability, making it a compelling destination for travelers,” he says.

 

The Mice Industry and Regal Hotels’ Strengths

Regal Hotels is a strong player in the Mice (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry, with over 100 meeting spaces across its properties.  Jeffrey highlights the Regal Airport Hotel, which boasts 30 function spaces, including a ballroom that can accommodate over 1,500 people.  He believes that Regal Hotels offers a diverse range of options for Mice events, catering to various needs and budgets.

 

Personal Travel and Advice for Aspiring Professionals

 

Jeffrey enjoys traveling with his wife, exploring Europe, Japan, and Korea.  He advises aspiring professionals to be themselves, try new things, and not be afraid to explore different departments within the hospitality industry.  “If you like it, go for it. If you don’t, change,” he says.  “The most important thing is to find something you enjoy and to be passionate about what you do.”
