GCash has joined forces with Alipay+ and PayPay to enable cashless payments for its users at over three million merchants across Japan. This strategic partnership comes as the Philippines-based fintech company aims to cater to the increasing number of Filipino travelers visiting Japan.
Paul Albano, general manager of GCash International, highlighted that this collaboration provides GCash users with a reliable and secure payment option, addressing the limited payment methods available to Filipinos traveling in Japan. With Japan emerging as a top destination for Filipino tourists, the partnership is expected to enhance their travel experience.
Since its launch in Japan in 2023, GCash has leveraged its connection with Alipay+ to improve access to cashless payments. The expanded partnership with PayPay, Japan’s leading QR payment operator, allows GCash users to make seamless transactions in both major cities and smaller towns across Japan. Filipino travelers can now pay at various local merchants, such as izakayas, wagashi shops, and guesthouses, by scanning PayPay QR codes or displaying the QR code generated by the "Pay Abroad with Alipay+" option in the GCash app. Transaction receipts will be issued in both Japanese yen and Philippine pesos.
GCash users benefit from real-time, competitive foreign exchange rates and zero service fees, maximizing their spending power while traveling. The platform also offers exclusive promotions through A+ Rewards, providing discounts when users pay with the Global Pay QR feature. To celebrate the holiday season, GCash is offering a 10% discount (up to JPY 1,000) for users paying via PayPay QR at participating merchants from December 20, 2024, to January 10, 2025.
