Germany, Mayor Belmonte, and SPARK! establish community sewing center for Quezon City women

Quezon City - Earlier in December, the German Embassy Manila and the Quezon City Government through the Office of Mayor Joy Belmonte in partnership with SPARK! Philippines established the Quezon City Women’s Sewing Center in Barangay Bahay Toro.

The Quezon City Women’s Sewing Center will be open for the use of the women of Barangay Bahay Toro and Quezon City as a resource center for the use of high-speed sewing machines as well as sewing skills training, and is the third sewing center of this kind established in Quezon City by the local government and SPARK! Philippines.

“We are grateful for the partnership of the Embassy of Germany and the Quezon City Government through Mayor Joy Belmonte in this project for women’s economic empowerment, and look forward to equipping more women with skills to help them towards financial independence,” said SPARK! Philippines Executive Director Maica Teves.

Quezon City Government plans to utilize the sewing centers to create a circular economy for school uniforms, to both create employment and economic opportunities for the city’s women and provide for the city’s needs for sewed materials.

This facility was made possible through the German Embassy’s small-scale development activities, which aims to support projects that would directly improve the quality of life of indigent and marginalized people. The formal launching of this facility is projected for January 2020, and SPARK! Philippines will continue collaboration with the local government to support its operation.
