CEBU CITY, Philippines – South Korea’s SelTech Co. Ltd. is set to establish a 100-megawatt solar power farm in Sogod, Cebu, marking a significant step in addressing the Philippines' energy challenges and advancing its renewable energy commitments under the National Renewable Energy Program 2020-2040.

The $100 million (₱5.7 billion) investment will introduce an agrivoltaics solar farm, combining solar energy production with agricultural activities, supporting sustainability goals in the region.

Memorandum of Understanding Signed

SelTech Managing Director Bong Ho Cho and Sogod Mayor Lisa Marie Durano-Streegan formalized the project through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed on November 29. The agreement outlines the creation of a Technical Working Group to:

  • Identify a suitable project site.

  • Establish training programs.

  • Coordinate logistical and institutional procedures.

  • Conduct joint evaluations and planning.

“This partnership brings an innovative approach to renewable energy and agriculture, enhancing sustainability for Sogod and its neighboring areas,” the MOU highlighted.

SelTech’s Renewable Energy Experience

SelTech, headquartered in Cheongju City, South Korea, operates multiple solar power plants domestically and internationally. Since 2022, the company has expanded to Sri Lanka, the UAE, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Its agrivoltaics system, which integrates solar panels with agricultural production, aligns with Cebu's sustainability and energy efficiency goals.

Blockchain Integration for Energy Payments

In addition to the solar project, SelTech is collaborating with Filipino-Korean firm C PASS Topwallet to digitize power bill payments. Using secure blockchain technology, the partnership offers consumers a convenient and reliable way to manage electricity payments.

C PASS, in collaboration with Topjuan Tech, holds an EMI and VASP license from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), enabling nationwide mobile payment solutions. The company also provides e-wallet services across Europe.

A Step Towards Sustainable Energy

Located 77 kilometers north of Cebu City, Sogod is poised to benefit from the investment, which addresses both energy demands and agricultural productivity. This project contributes to the Philippine government’s goal of achieving a 35% renewable energy share by 2030 and 50% by 2040.

The SelTech solar farm is expected to set a precedent for integrating green energy solutions with economic development, aligning with global efforts to combat climate change while supporting local communities.
