Megaworld Hotels & Resorts Achieves 100% Muslim-Friendly Certification

Megaworld Hotels & Resorts (MHR) has made history as the first hospitality chain in the Philippines to have all 13 of its properties certified as 100% Muslim-friendly by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco awarded the certification during a ceremony on Wednesday, commending MHR’s commitment to inclusivity. “This is a significant milestone in transforming Philippine tourism into a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive industry,” Frasco said.

Certified Properties and Halal Kitchens

The newly certified properties include:

  • Belmont Hotel (Manila, Boracay, and Mactan)

  • Savoy Hotel (Manila, Boracay, and Mactan Newtown)

  • Richmonde Hotels (Eastwood, Ortigas, and Iloilo)

  • Kingsford Hotel Manila

  • Twin Lakes Hotel

Additionally, Hotel Lucky Chinatown and Grand Westside Hotel are on track to receive Halal certifications in 2025. Four properties, including Kingsford Hotel Manila and Belmont Hotel Mactan, already have Halal-certified kitchens, ensuring compliance with Islamic dietary laws.

Inclusivity for Muslim Guests

MHR Managing Director Cleofe Albiso highlighted the chain’s dedication to creating an inclusive environment. “By incorporating Halal-certified kitchens, prayer rooms, and Muslim-friendly amenities, we aim to foster spaces that reflect Filipino warmth, hospitality, and respect,” she said.

All regular employees across the 13 properties have undergone training to cater to the unique needs of Muslim travelers.

Expanding the Muslim-Friendly Experience

In collaboration with the DOT, MHR has introduced Boracay’s first Muslim-friendly beach at Cove 2 in Boracay Newcoast. This 300-meter stretch of white sand includes amenities designed for Muslim families, such as private spaces and dedicated prayer facilities.

Growing Market for Muslim Tourism

The Philippines is actively positioning itself as a preferred destination for Muslim travelers, particularly from Southeast Asia and the Middle East. From January to November 2024, tourist arrivals from Muslim-majority countries reached 547,197, a 9.8% increase from the previous year.

The DOT is working to enhance the country’s Muslim-friendly offerings, with 17 properties now DOT-certified, including Dusit Thani Manila, The Farm at San Benito, and Grand Summit Hotel General Santos.

MHR’s achievement signals a significant step forward in making Philippine tourism more inclusive, welcoming, and competitive on the global stage.
