Philippines Set to Defend Its Titles at 2024 World Travel Awards

The Philippines is gearing up to defend its title as a premier travel destination at the 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA), set to take place in Madeira, Portugal, on November 24. This prestigious event marks the culmination of WTA’s global search for the best destinations and travel organizations. As part of this competition, the country will compete in several categories, showcasing its unique offerings to the world.

Voting for the world categories will conclude on October 20, with travelers encouraged to participate by casting their votes on the WTA website. The Philippines will compete for several coveted awards, including:

- World’s Leading Beach Destination

- World’s Leading Dive Destination

- World’s Leading Island Destination

- World’s Leading City Destination: Manila

- World’s Leading Wedding Destination: Cebu

- World’s Leading Tourist Attraction: Intramuros

- World’s Leading Marketing Campaign: Love the Philippines by the Department of Tourism

- World’s Leading Tourist Board: Department of Tourism

Tourism Secretary Christina Frasco expressed enthusiasm for the nominations, emphasizing that each recognition celebrates the diverse and unique experiences the Philippines has to offer. “We can’t wait to welcome travelers from around the world to discover more of what there is to love in our country’s diverse regions,” she stated.

Recently, the Philippines garnered several awards at the WTA Asia and Oceania Gala Ceremony, held in Manila for the first time. The country took home titles such as Asia’s Leading Beach, Dive, and Island Destinations, alongside other accolades for notable locations like Boracay and Intramuros. In 2023, the Philippines earned global recognition, claiming the titles of World’s Leading Beach Destination, World’s Leading Dive Destination, World’s Leading City Destination for Manila, and an inaugural Global Tourism Resilience Award during the 30th WTA.

The recent accolades underscore the Philippines’ status as a major player in global tourism. Secretary Frasco encouraged both local and international audiences to vote, highlighting the opportunity to showcase the beauty and diversity of the Philippines to a wider audience. “The Philippines' unique attributes are a constant source of pride to every Filipino. I encourage everyone—both here and abroad—to cast their votes and help us reveal to the world the many things there are to Love the Philippines,” she added.

In addition to the various destinations representing the country, several private sector entities have also received nominations for this year’s WTA. Notable contenders include Cebu Pacific, nominated for the World’s Leading Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline, and various hotels and resorts, such as Savoy Hotel Manila for World’s Leading Airport Hotel, Discovery Primea for World’s Leading Business Hotel, and City of Dreams Manila for World’s Leading Casino Resort.

The WTA, established in 1993, is regarded as one of the most prestigious award programs in the travel industry. It recognizes excellence across various sectors, including travel, tourism, and hospitality, and serves as an important benchmark for quality and service in the industry. The upcoming event not only highlights the achievements of the Philippine tourism sector but also reinforces its commitment to sustainable tourism and cultural promotion.

As the Philippines prepares to compete at the WTA, the nation’s diverse attractions—from its breathtaking beaches and rich historical sites to vibrant festivals and warm hospitality—are set to shine on the global stage. The anticipation for this event is high, as the Philippines aims to continue its tradition of excellence in tourism and solidify its reputation as a top destination for travelers worldwide.
